How to keep the whole family safe on the beach in summer

Family holidays on the beach are very fun and enjoyable, no doubt about it. But even this innocent entertainment is fraught with some dangers that it is better to know about in advance.

Follow these simple instructions to ensure that your vacation is always safe and enjoyable:

1. Take a first aid kit with you

No one is safe from accidents, so take a first aid kit with you. The beach first aid kit should contain: latex gloves, bandages, antibacterial wipes, pain reliever, antacid, aloe gel, ziplock bags, tweezers, antihistamine and regular wet wipes.

2. Protect yourself from UV

The ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun can cause cancer if the skin is not protected from them. Maximum UV exposure occurs between 10:00 and 16:00, but children should be protected whenever they leave the house. Caps, clothing and dark glasses are indispensable for UV protection.

3. Pick a sunscreen

To protect children from UVA and UVB rays, sunscreen SPF15 or higher should be used. Apply it 30 minutes before going out and every 2 hours thereafter. Unprotected skin can burn in 15 minutes, but this does not always appear immediately – sometimes it takes up to 12 hours.

4. Remember Clouds Can’t Protect You

If you find a beach in the shade, don’t rush to congratulate yourself. On a cloudy day, sunscreen should also be used. Clouds do not block UV rays, they only filter them.

5. Drink water

Do not wait until you or the people accompanying you begin to be overcome by thirst. Drink water at all times to prevent dehydration and heat stroke.

6. Be aware of the symptoms of overheating

There are many signs of overheating, which is detrimental to health. These are nausea, dizziness, clouding of consciousness, fatigue and weakness. In this case, the person should be removed from the sun as soon as possible.

More serious symptoms of sunburn include muscle cramps, fainting, high fever, and vomiting.

7. Make sure the water is clean

If the water looks clean, it does not mean that there is no infection in it. In different countries, sanitary and epidemiological services, as a rule, monitor the level of bacterial contamination of water bodies. Check with them before you go swimming.

8. Beware of water sickness

Spending time on the water for a long time can cause various diseases in children, which parents should be aware of. The ingress of water into the body can provoke gastrointestinal, ear, eye, respiratory and wound infections.

9. Give up alcohol

If this is allowed on the beach, the temptation to drink a cold beer can be very strong, but this is fraught with unpleasant consequences. First, parents must remain completely sober in order to watch their children on the water and notice the first signs of danger. Secondly, in the sun, alcohol is very harmful: it aggravates dehydration and increases the risk of heat stroke.

10. Rely on friends

No one should swim alone on the high seas. Let the most experienced swimmers accompany the children just in case.

11. Put on inflatable vests

Put on inflatable armbands or life jackets before letting your kids go swimming in the ocean.

12. Stay close to the pros

If you are on the beach with children or people who are not good swimmers, try to choose a place closer to the rescue post so that in case of emergency they will be noticed faster.

13. Tell us about rip currents

Rip currents are common along some coasts – dangerous waves that can carry swimmers away from the shore. Tell everyone to swim parallel to the shore when they get caught in this current, and don’t try to swim against the current.

14. Don’t bathe in a storm

If the sky is overcast, it is better to postpone the trip to the beach. It may seem to you that you will have time to slip through, but the risk is not worth it, especially if you remember about lightning.
