The Hong Kong Court of Appeal of Last Instance has ruled to return to custody media mogul Jimmy Lai, accused of violating the National Security Act, radio station RTHK reports.
In connection with the tightening of the measure of restraint, 73-year-old Lai will be transferred from house arrest back to the pre-trial detention center, where he will stay until the next court hearing, which is scheduled for April 16.
Last week, the court released the businessman on house arrest on bail of HK $ 10 million (approximately US $ 1.3 million). At the same time, the man was forbidden to communicate with journalists and foreigners, as well as to move and make notes on social networks.
It is worth recalling that the media mogul was detained in early December in a fraud case, and was subsequently charged with conspiring with foreign forces to threaten national security.
In 2019, Jimmy Lai became a defendant in the case of mass protests in Hong Kong. He was suspected of leading a group that maintains ties with the political elite of the United States.
