“He won’t care at all”: an expert on China’s position in relation to the Lukashenka regime

The recent telephone conversation between Alexander Lukashenko and President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping was regarded by some as China’s support for the current regime in the republic. Observers gave their assessment of what is happening.

The press service of the President of Belarus said that Alexander Lukashenko expressed gratitude to Xi Jinping for his support in the international arena. At the same time, a number of countries do not recognize the authorities in the country as legitimate.

Pavel Usov, head of the Center for Political Analysis and Forecasting (Warsaw), noted that China is a super-authoritarian power and therefore relations with other authoritarian regimes that have compromised themselves in the international arena are normal for him. China was one of the first states to recognize the victory of Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential elections on August 9, 2020.

However, China’s support for the Belarusian regime is very conditional, the expert said. In the international arena, Beijing did not act as a goodwill ambassador for the Belarusian president. According to Usov, Beijing will not promote the interests of Belarus or defend it in international structures, as Russia does.

In his opinion, the PRC will continue to develop economic relations with the republic. At the same time, China does not interfere in internal political processes. “He will absolutely not care whether Lukashenka or Tikhanovskaya is president here,” Usov expressed his point of view.

In addition, Beijing did not give a single dollar to support the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. The political scientist doubts that the leaders of Belarus and China in a telephone conversation discussed the political situation in the republic and beyond.

In turn, economist Lev Margolin noted that one should not exaggerate the importance of the telephone conversation between Alexander Lukashenko and the President of the PRC. He believes that China will, if possible, remain neutral with regard to the situation in Belarus.
