Guterres called 2020 the worst year in modern history

UN Secretary General António Guterres announced two main priorities for the work of the global organization in 2021: defeating the COVID-19 pandemic and containing climate change. TASS reports.

According to Gutterisch, it is necessary to make sure that the “terrible” 2020 is replaced by 2021, in which the situation has changed, and hope has come to the place of despair.

The Secretary General noted that the main task for the current year is to overcome the pandemic and recover from it.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the extreme climate situation. “We must take seriously what the scientific community tells us that we must prevent temperatures from rising by more than 1.5 degrees by the end of this century,” Guterres said. He added that preparations are underway for the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Glasgow.

Gutterisch previously said that in 2020 the level of extreme poverty increased worldwide for the first time in 22 years. According to him, the coronavirus pandemic has led to the development of some negative trends. Another 18 million to 27 million people are expected to end up in poverty.
