The Order for contribution to the development of relations and strengthening of peace between Russia and Kazakhstan was presented to the head of the region by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to the Russian Federation Yermek Kosherbayev. The Governor’s meeting with Yermek Kosherbayev and members of the Atyrau Oblast delegation headed by First Deputy Akim Serik Aidarbekov took place yesterday in Astrakhan.
“It is a great honor for me to be awarded the state award of Kazakhstan. I regard this as a high assessment of the contribution of the Astrakhan region to the development of good relations between Russia and the Republic of Kazakhstan,” said Igor Babushkin.
The parties discussed a number of important issues on the development of cooperation. At the end of 2021, the region’s foreign trade turnover with Kazakhstan amounted to almost $17 million. Traditionally, food products, building materials and agricultural raw materials are exported. The governor noted that the volume of trade could be increased by creating a border trade center on the border of the Astrakhan and Atyrau regions.
“Railway and air traffic has resumed, face-to-face meetings are being held, which will only contribute to building up relations,” the head of the region noted.
Relations are developing not only in the economic sphere. Today, up to 1.5 thousand students from Kazakhstan study in Astrakhan, youth policy, sports, and culture are being developed. They come to us for medical help. Before the pandemic, 6,000 Kazakhstanis came to Astrakhan medical facilities every year.
During the negotiations, the topics of joint work with the Atyrau region on environmental protection, prevention and elimination of steppe fires were also touched upon. Igor Babushkin took the initiative to develop a set of joint environmental measures aimed at the conservation of saigas.
The governor offered to sign an agreement on twinning between Astrakhan and Atyrau.
“Our cities play a special role in our cooperation and are historically closely connected,” he stressed.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Russian Federation Yermek Kosherbayev noted that, thanks to the governor, cooperation between the regions began to develop again after a forced break due to the pandemic.
“The visit of the delegation from Atyrau is an important step in establishing close and productive contacts in all areas,” said Yermek Kosherbaev.
Serik Aidarbekov, First Deputy Akim of the Atyrau Region, thanked Igor Babushkin for the invitation to visit the region and supported the head’s initiative to create a border trade center.
“For two days, we visited the industrial and agricultural enterprises of your region, met with the heads of key ministries and departments,” said Serik Aidarbekov. We have a lot to learn from you, to learn from experience. We have many areas of mutually beneficial cooperation that need to be developed.”
