German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas announced his intention to consider with his European colleagues on Monday the possibility of introducing new sanctions against Belarus, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the head of the German department, after the last meeting, the situation in the republic has not changed.
“The violence continues, and the detention of peaceful demonstrators continues. Therefore, we will discuss how to proceed further, "- explained the representative of Germany.
Mass also expressed the opinion that this time restrictive measures should apply personally to the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
Recall that in early October, the EU summit agreed on sanctions against Belarus. It was reported that the restrictive measures affect about 40 officials. At the same time, the president of the republic, Alexander Lukashenko, was not included in the sanctions list. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, the inclusion of the Belarusian president on the black list would mean a refusal to dialogue.
Meanwhile, the Belarusian side has introduced a reciprocal sanctions list. It should be noted that the republic's sanctions against the European Union are automatically applied on the territory of Russia.
The United States had previously announced sanctions against Belarus and blacklisted eight Belarusian officials.
