German President presented letters of dismissal to Merkel and the Cabinet of Ministers

On October 26, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented Chancellor Angela Merkel and members of her cabinet of ministers with official letters of leave, n-tv reports.

Since the new government has not yet been formed, the current ministers end their term only formally and will continue to fulfill their duties.

Earlier Steinmeier had already asked Angela Merkel to continue doing business until a successor was appointed.

In his speech, the German president stressed that the chancellorship of Merkel, who headed the government for 16 years, “can be attributed to the greatest in the history of the republic.”

We add that on October 26, the Bundestag met in a new composition for the first time after the elections.

Three parties – the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Free Democratic Party of Germany – have already begun coalition negotiations. Presumably, the new chancellor will be elected between December 6-12.
