The Nord Stream 2 project has presented new US President Joe Biden with a dilemma in relations with Germany. This opinion was expressed by the German edition of the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Journalists believe that by “exchanging pleasantries” with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Biden “jeopardizes the consensus” between Democrats and Republicans, reached by them on the construction of the gas pipeline.
Earlier, US senators sent a letter to Biden, in which they said that relations between the United States and Germany are “the cornerstone of the transatlantic alliance”, but the implementation of the SP-2 would be “an unconstructive step for this partnership.”
This, the article notes, describes the dilemma facing the American leader. The pipeline has long been a controversial issue between Germany and the United States, and Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken have made it clear that they are concerned about improving relations with their allies, especially Berlin.
“However, the example of Nord Stream 2 shows how difficult it is in practice to“ switch the lever, ”the journalists emphasize.
We will remind, earlier in Germany promised not to change the approach to the construction of the gas pipeline under the new US president.
