The party “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia”, which is the ruling party in the republic, nominated Defense Minister Irakli Garibashvili as a candidate for prime minister. This was announced by the chairman of the party Irakli Kobakhidze at a briefing broadcast on the political association’s Facebook page.
Today, the head of the Georgian government, Giorgi Gakharia, resigned, announcing disagreements with the ruling team over attempts to detain opposition leader Nika Melia, accused of organizing and participating in the June 2019 riots, which ended in an attempt to storm parliament. After Gakharia’s resignation, the police suspended the procedure for arresting Melia.
According to Kobakhidze, Garibashvili is one of the leaders of the ruling party, “a professional with exceptional experience and can successfully take on work in the government.” He added that the approval of the new composition of the Cabinet will take place as soon as possible.
Irakli Garibashvili served as prime minister in 2013-2015. In the spring of 2019, he became the political secretary of the Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party, and in September he received the post of defense minister. Last fall, after the parliamentary elections, he retained this position.
