Georgian ruling party calls arrest of opposition leader Melia exemplary

Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, ex-speaker of parliament, called the arrest operation of the chairman of the United National Movement opposition party Nika Melia exemplary.

According to TASS, Kobakhidze thanked the Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri and the police officers who took part in the operation, noting that they protected the dignity of the state and ensured the implementation of the law.

Georgian law enforcement officers this morning carried out a special operation to arrest the opposition leader, former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s party leader Nika Melia, during which about ten of his supporters were also detained. It was reported that the police used pepper gas at the party’s office during the detention of Melia.

The chairman of the opposition United National Movement party is on trial in the case of riots at a rally in June 2019, he was detained for failure to pay bail in the amount of 40 thousand lari.

It should be reminded that due to disagreements with the ruling Georgian Dream party over the arrest of oppositionist Melia, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia had earlier resigned. He considered that the detention of the oppositionist could cause an escalation of the already tense political situation in the country.
