FT: China tested a hypersonic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons

In August, China launched a planning hypersonic aircraft (GLA) that can carry a nuclear charge. This is reported by the Financial Times.

According to the source, the GLA test was carried out using the Changzheng launch vehicle. During the maneuvers, the device did not reach its intended target and passed several tens of kilometers from it. Despite this, the rocket launch impressed American military leaders, as it showed the progress of Chinese scientists in the creation of hypersonic weapons.

The newspaper writes that in theory the rocket can fly through the South Pole. This poses a serious threat to the American air defense system, as it is determined to repel attacks from the north.

The US Defense Department ignored the launch of the Chinese GLA. However, the Pentagon has expressed concerns about China’s military activity, which is fueling tensions.

“This is the reason why we believe that China is a defining challenge for us,” said US military spokesman John Kirby.

At the same time, Liu Pengyu, a representative of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, said that the military policy of the PRC is defensive in nature. In addition, he accused Washington of creating a “Chinese threat” myth that justifies the development of hypersonic weapons.

The publication believes that the GLA tests were classified. They were to take place as part of the 78th launch of a carrier rocket of the Changzheng family. However, official Chinese sources did not report it. Thus, after the launch of the Changzheng-2-si rocket on July 19, which was the 77th launch of the rocket, the 79th launch immediately followed.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin regretted the start of an arms race.
