FSB officers stopped the activities of a cell of the international terrorist organization Katiba Tawhid wal-Jihad (banned in the Russian Federation), whose members, natives of one of the countries of the Central Asian region, planned sabotage and terrorist acts in Volgograd. This was reported by the press service of the department.
As noted in the Center for Public Relations (DSP) of the FSB, the activities of the terrorists were coordinated from the territory of Syria. The militants planned attacks on "the buildings of the authorities, the residences of military personnel and explosive and fire-hazardous enterprises."
“During the arrest, the ringleader and his accomplice, who were trying to extract the means of terror from a cache previously equipped in Volgograd, put up armed resistance to the FSB of Russia and as a result were neutralized,” the message says.
Weapons, ammunition, chemical components and submunitions for improvised bombs, religious literature, as well as a map of Volgograd with the planned places of terrorist attacks marked on it were found at the scene and during searches at the addresses of the Islamists' residence. As can be seen on the video footage published by the FSB, the terrorists were planning a terrorist attack at the Motherland Calls monument: the monument was circled in black as a target.
Other members of the cell were detained in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Maikop and Volgograd.
