The special services have detained the former head of the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov, the ministry’s press service reported.

He is suspected of high treason. Masimov was detained on January 6. Now he and other suspects are in jail.

Recall, on January 5, the head of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, by his decree dismissed Masimov from his post. The former head of the State Security Service Yermek Sagimbayev became the chairman of the National Security Committee.

Massimov was previously the prime minister of Kazakhstan twice, as well as an assistant to Nursultan Nazarbayev. He headed the KNB since 2016.

The resignation came against the backdrop of riots that began at the beginning of the month. Tokayev turned to the Collective Security Treaty Organization for help. Peacekeepers arrived in the country the day before.

According to the authorities, the most difficult situation remains in Alma-Ata: the city was attacked by about 20 thousand bandits. Among them were foreign citizens. The counter-terrorist operation is ongoing there.
