Foreign Ministry: US violates European nuclear non-proliferation treaty

Director of the Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Ermakov made a statement regarding the deployment of US nuclear weapons on the territory of European countries.

The Russian Foreign Ministry raised the issue of the violation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons by the US government. Vladimir Ermakov, Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control, clarified that non-strategic nuclear weapons were deployed in Europe, and in countries that do not have their own nuclear weapons. This is a violation of the NPT treaty. In addition, the United States is also engaged in the modernization of these weapons, including delivery vehicles. All this poses a threat to the security of Russia.

Also, Vladimir Ermakov drew attention to NATO’s “joint nuclear missions”, including with the participation of non-nuclear countries that are members of the alliance. This is also a violation of the agreements.

The United States currently has an advantage in strategic offensive weapons. As of September 1, the United States has 2854 units, Russia – 2727. The number of US nuclear weapons in Europe has not been disclosed.

In February 2021, the START Treaty was extended between the countries. According to the document, the United States and Russia have the right and the ability to deploy no more than 1,550 nuclear warheads. The number of deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles, SLBMs and missile-carrying bombers should not exceed 700 units, and 800 heavy bombers.
