Five main consequences of the coronavirus

Almost every third patient who has had a new coronavirus infection is faced with a postcoid or longcoid.

For this condition, even a separate name was allocated in the International Classification of Diseases, recognizing the problem as extremely serious. Therefore, in Russia they decided to expand the prophylactic medical examination program for survivors of covid. Mir Novosti learned what in-depth examinations can be taken in a polyclinic under the compulsory medical insurance policy and what symptoms should be paid close attention to.

Today, many scientific teams are busy studying health problems that begin after suffering covid. The authoritative medical journal The Lancet has published the results of one of the largest studies on this topic. They say that even months after the disease, even if it has passed almost unnoticed or in a mild form, a person may develop post-covid symptoms that affect various body systems: respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, endocrine.

Experts have compiled the five most dangerous targets for which the coronavirus hits the body.

The first place was taken, of course, by the respiratory system. One of the most common symptoms of a postcovid is prolonged shortness of breath (not only during exertion, but also at rest), a feeling of incomplete inhalation. In addition, many patients experience chest pain associated with damage to the lungs. And some develop pulmonary fibrosis (the process of replacing the tissues of the lung with connective tissue), although the good news is that this fibrosis is still reversible and passes over time.

In addition, the virus hits the vascular system and heart. As a result, those who have been ill increase the risk of acute cerebrovascular accidents (including strokes). Many people complain of tachycardia. The formidable complications of the new coronavirus infection include heart failure, cardiomyopathy, acute coronary syndrome, myocardial infarction, as well as thrombosis and thrombophlebitis due to a violation of the hemostasis system (blood clotting).

The virus also acts on the gastrointestinal tract. Many complain of long-lasting abdominal pain, constant nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea.

Another target of the virus is the central nervous system. Hence anxiety disorders, depression, insomnia, impaired attention and memory. Doctors even began to distinguish a separate post-coccygeal brain fog syndrome (“fog in the head”).

The manifestations of a disorder of the nervous system also include anosmia (disappearance of odors) and perversion of tastes (many stop eating meat, because for them it smells like rot, etc.).

Do not forget about the endocrine system, which the virus also does not bypass. If a person who has recovered constantly feels increased fatigue, it cannot be ruled out that the adrenal function has failed and the body has ceased to produce the hormone cortisol in the required quantities. Constant fatigue is one of the symptoms of cortisol deficiency. In especially severe cases, the patient, even after sleep, feels completely overwhelmed and fatigued. Such a common symptom as hair loss (up to baldness) can also speak of endocrine disorders.

Other manifestations of the postkovid also include impaired immunity, skin manifestations, pain in muscles and joints.

People with chronic diseases are most vulnerable both to the covid itself and to its consequences. Doctors distinguish several groups of pathologies in which complications are most critical and can lead to unfavorable outcomes and even death of the patient.

We are talking about lung diseases (in particular, about bronchial asthma), diabetes mellitus, oncology, autoimmune pathologies. At the same time, a decrease in immunity during the body’s fight against coronavirus infection inevitably leads to an exacerbation of any chronic diseases.

In an increased risk group for thrombosis are people with chronic diseases associated with metabolic disorders, overweight, as well as chronic heart disease. In addition, perhaps the most life-threatening condition after an illness is a violation of hemostasis and subsequent thrombosis of the lungs and pulmonary artery, which can lead to death.

Doctors recommend that all patients who have encountered any manifestations of postkovid and cannot recover from the disease for a long time should undergo an in-depth medical examination. Such an opportunity has appeared – since July 1, an expanded prophylactic medical examination program for those who have recovered from COVID-19 has been launched in Russia. The examinations carried out on time will help to identify hidden health problems.

Here is a list of examinations that are included in the new program:

measurement of saturation (oxygen concentration) in the blood at rest;

6-minute walk test (if there are complaints of shortness of breath or causeless edema);

spirometry – helps to assess the functional state of the bronchi;

determination of the concentration of D-dimer in the blood – reveals the risks of thrombus formation;

general (clinical) and biochemical blood tests – help to assess, for example, the presence of inflammatory processes in the patient’s body, the latent course of infections.

As necessary and depending on the results of the examinations, the doctor may prescribe additional procedures, for example, Echo-KG (ultrasound of the heart), CT of the lungs, duplex scanning of the veins of the lower extremities, and also refer to narrow specialists.

If any complications of the coronavirus or chronic diseases are identified, you will be put on dispensary observation. This means that in-depth diagnostics will be prescribed, as well as (possibly) a rehabilitation and supportive therapy program.

The problem of rehabilitation of such patients today is especially acute not only in our country, but all over the world. And this topic is actively engaged in private clinics. The latter, of course, do not do it for free, while their programs often contain many hardly really necessary (albeit pleasant) procedures. For example, massages, spa capsules, aromatherapy, etc.

If you don’t feel sorry for time and money – for God’s sake. However, do not forget that in-depth medical examination is today included in the Program of State Guarantees of Free Provision of Medical Care to Citizens for 2021-2023, that is, you are entitled to free of charge under the compulsory medical insurance policy.

Feel free to seek help if you just experience unpleasant symptoms. “It is important to take into account that there are situations when delay is unacceptable,” says Aleksey Bereznikov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, an expert of an insurance medical organization. – The patient is receiving or has already received medical assistance, but the assistance of the compulsory health insurance company is required. In this case, the “Help Line” service has been developed. In order to use it, you just need to fill out an application on the website. An intuitive form is available from any gadget. The experts will join the solution of the issue with medical organizations, conduct an examination of the quality of medical care and give recommendations on further steps, route the patient to the right medical institution. “
