Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen said that the participation of his country’s army in international exercises would be a strong signal for Russia. He also said that Finland will increasingly participate in international military maneuvers during the period of consideration of the application for NATO membership. There are currently four NATO ships in the port of Helsinki, which have arrived for exercises in the Baltic Sea. According to the minister, this is a sign that Finland is supported, which contributes to strengthening the defense capability. Petteri Orpo, chairman of the parliamentary defense committee, agreed with these conclusions, and considered that this was indeed a political signal to other countries.
Recall that Finland and Sweden, which for a long time adhered to a neutral position in the international arena, declared their desire to join NATO immediately after Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine. To the application of these countries, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg replied that the alliance would be glad to see new members in its ranks. He also promised these countries rapid integration.
In a conversation with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niiniste, Vladimir Putin said that abandoning the policy of neutrality would be erroneous, since there are no threats to Finland’s security.
