Former ambassador of Moldova to the Russian Federation Andrei Negutsa was detained for 72 hours as a suspect in the case of smuggling of anabolic steroids, RIA Novosti writes with reference to the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office.
The ministry said that the diplomat and his lawyers today appeared before the prosecutors for combating organized crime and special cases. As a result, the state prosecutors made a decision on the preliminary detention of the suspect.
Negutsa denies any involvement in smuggling.
The prosecutor’s office will check his testimony and decide on a possible extension of the preliminary arrest period.
In early December, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry reported that the Republic’s Information and Security Service, together with the Customs Service, prevented an attempt to smuggle a consignment of anabolic steroids, which they were going to take out of the country in a car with the numbers of the Moldovan Embassy in Russia. After the incident, Negutsu was recalled from his post as ambassador.
