EU countries have not yet developed a common position on the NPT

A senior EU official said that the European Union has not yet worked out a common position on the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which entered into force on Friday, Interfax reports.

“The EU member states have no common position or common approach to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and whether it is good or bad. Now there are debates between some EU members, but not about whether to join this treaty or not, but about whether it is useful, ”he said.

It is noted that the European Union doubts that the treaty will make it possible to achieve a ban on nuclear weapons.

Earlier it was reported that NATO member states expressed disagreement with the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) because of its contradictions to the existing architecture of disarmament.

As a reminder, the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty entered into force on January 22. As of today, 51 countries have ratified it, the nuclear powers do not participate in the document.
