A scientist from the University of Sunderland (UK) Karan Rangarjan spoke about the benefits of wearing a beard. The researcher compared hospital staff with and without beards.
“The study showed that clean-shaven faces are 3 times more likely to encounter the dangerous bacterium methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA),” the surgeon said.
He clarified that this bacterium is resistant to many antibiotics, so the treatment becomes more complicated. “The result may be due to the fact that shaving creates lesions that are an ideal breeding ground for these bacteria,” explained the physician.
Also, according to him, a beard reduces the risk of cancer and sunburn. The presence of facial hair reduces the damage from ultraviolet radiation by a third compared to clean-shaven skin.
“A beard not only protects the skin from aging by blocking out the sun’s rays, but also acts as a barrier to prevent you from constantly touching the skin of your face,” the expert said, adding that it also helps keep the skin soft.
