Do I need to weigh myself every day?

Many people are currently working on the goal of losing weight. However, with so much conflicting information about health and fitness, getting started on your weight loss journey can be confusing. Even something as simple as weighing raises questions. How often should you weigh yourself? What time of day do you do it?

Do I really need to weigh myself every day?

How often you should weigh yourself depends on many factors. The general recommendation is to weigh yourself once or twice a week. Be sure to step on the scale at the same time (preferably in the morning) because your body weight will fluctuate throughout the day. You must also weigh yourself without clothes.

However, weighing is not for everyone. “Daily weight monitoring is appropriate for certain patients who are motivated, comfortable and aware of the natural fluctuations in body weight.” This was stated by Reshmi Srinath, MD, director of the Mount Sinai Weight and Metabolism Management Program.

Who needs to stop weighing themselves every day?

There are many good reasons to weigh yourself daily. Daily weigh-ins can keep you motivated and even help you lose weight more successfully. You can also make more informed nutritional decisions throughout the day if you notice that you haven’t reached your weight loss goals in the morning.

However, there are many downsides. Weighing too often can give you misleading information about your progress. Body weight often fluctuates due to many factors, including water retention, salt intake, and hormones.

Watching these fluctuations can also be frustrating and discouraging for people who don’t understand that weight fluctuations throughout the day are normal.

Frequent weighing can also lead to unhealthy behaviors such as excessive exercise or extreme diets. If you find yourself fixated on your weight, you should probably stop weighing yourself so often.
