Diplomat Gavrilov: the meeting between Lavrov and Blinken could be a breakthrough

At a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, there could be a breakthrough in negotiations on proposals for security guarantees in Europe, which the Russian side presented to the US and NATO amid the escalation of the crisis in Ukraine.

This opinion was expressed by the head of the Russian delegation at the talks in Vienna on issues of military security and arms control, Konstantin Gavrilov, speaking on the air of Rossiya 24.

According to the diplomat, he very much hopes for the sanity and pragmatism of his American colleagues.

The meeting between Lavrov and Blinken is scheduled for January 21. It will be held in Geneva after the visits of the head of the State Department to Kiev and Berlin.

Anthony Blinken said earlier that he would not submit written responses to the security proposals to the Russian Foreign Minister on Friday, adding that it was not clear to the White House which of them were central.

The Secretary of State noted that Washington intends to continue diplomatic engagement with Moscow to resolve the situation around Ukraine “for as long as it can.”
