The duration of the presence of peacekeepers in Kazakhstan will depend on the situation and on the decision of the country’s leadership, said CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
The CSTO hopes that the period of its presence in the country will be short. Zas stressed that the decision of the Collective Security Council indicated that the peacekeepers were sent to Kazakhstan “for a short period.”
“What kind of short period – several days, or several weeks – it will depend on the situation that develops in Kazakhstan and, of course, on the position of the leadership of Kazakhstan,” the secretary general added.
Zas said that about 2.5 thousand peacekeepers will arrive in Kazakhstan. They will proceed from the situation, if necessary, their number can be increased.
The troops will be withdrawn after the leadership of Kazakhstan considers that the situation in the country has stabilized and is controlled without the help of other states, Zas concluded.
Recall that against the background of protests in Kazakhstan, the President of the Republic, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, turned to the CSTO partners for help. He later thanked the Organization for helping to overcome the crisis and sending the peacekeeping force. Tokayev promised citizens that he would do everything possible to protect their interests.
