The G20 Summit of Heads of State and Government kicked off in the Italian capital on October 30. However, Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping decided not to attend the event in person, limiting themselves to video broadcasts.

According to the official version, Putin refused to travel to Rome for the G20 summit due to the difficult epidemiological situation in Russia. CNN Senior International Correspondent Sam Kylie noted that additional security measures are justified as death rates from COVID-19 remain high.

At the same time, the journalist suggested that the Russian leader had another and more compelling reason not to attend the G20. According to him, Putin considered it inappropriate to waste his time at the forum.

Kylie recalled that the countries participating in the event are busy solving their own problems. For example, France and Britain have mutual claims over fishing, and the United States has a difficult relationship with NATO allies after the failure in Afghanistan. In addition, practice shows that there are usually no “breakthrough decisions” at mass meetings.

The CNN journalist stressed that Vladimir Putin, like the leader of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, who is absent from the summit, prefers to hold bilateral meetings, plunging into problems. That is why he chose not to waste his time on the trip to Rome.
