Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan help the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko with the delivery of migrants from the Middle East to the borders of the countries of the European Union. The German Bild writes about this with reference to high-ranking officials of the German security forces.

The interlocutors of the publication claim that Lukashenka deliberately brings migrants to Belarus in order to then transport them to neighboring Lithuania and Poland. At the same time, migrants are often allegedly forced to cross the EU border at gunpoint.

The publication also claims that Moscow and Ankara allegedly provide logistical support to the Belarusian leader. The main role in this process is played by Russian and Turkish airlines with state participation, which transport migrants to Minsk. Bild claims that this information was confirmed at once by several employees of the security forces of Berlin, as well as the head of the federal police union Heiko Teggats, according to which, despite the obviousness of the state of affairs, it is difficult to impose sanctions on Russian and Turkish air carriers, since they are important for the entire European air traffic.

It is alleged that the Belarusian airline Belavia is also taking an active part in the transfer of migrants to Europe. So, at present, the schedule of the Minsk airport includes 57 flights a week to the Middle East. In particular, among the directions there are Syrian Damascus, the flight to which belongs to the cousin of the President of the country. Bashar al-Assad airline Cham Wing, the city of Erbil in northern Iraq and Ras Al Khaimah – the capital of the emirate of the same name, which is considered the poorest in the UAE. These flights, as the newspaper writes, are apparently not intended for ordinary passengers, since it is impossible to book tickets for them on the airlines’ websites.

In Russia, they react to the situation with restraint. As a Kremlin spokesman said Dmitry PeskovMoscow hopes that the situation on the Belarusian-Polish border will not take on forms that would threaten Russia’s security.

Earlier, Putin said that Russia cannot interfere in the affairs of other countries, including the migration crisis on the border of Belarus and the EU. According to him, this problem is a sovereign affair of Belarus and its neighbors, and “Russia has nothing to do with it.”

“For the West, the search for a“ Russian trace ”, especially in the events in the post-Soviet space, is a common thing,” said Vsevolod Shimov, adviser to the president of the Russian Association for Baltic Studies.

– As for Erdogan, he has already used “migration blackmail” in relations with the EU. In Europe, Turkish airlines are suspected of delivering migrants to Belarus, from where they then go to the border with Poland. Given that relations between Turkey and the EU are now very tense, the emergence of such suspicions is understandable.

SP: – Do you think Minsk really plays up to Erdogan?

– Belarus can thus try to “force” the EU to dialogue. Taking into account that Europe does not want to interact with the Belarusian leadership, considering it illegitimate, official Minsk demonstrates that it is impossible to solve the problems of European security without a dialogue with it.

“SP”: – How do these migrants get from the same Iraq to Belarus?

– Quite openly, through the Minsk airport. Belarus has opened visa-free entry for citizens of more than 80 states through the Minsk airport, including the states of the Middle East. And then the Belarusian authorities simply do not prevent these people from crossing the border, pointing out that the EU has refused to interact with Belarus in the field of illegal migration, and Minsk does not intend to keep migrants at its own expense. Again, this can be seen as an attempt to bring the Europeans to the negotiating table and thereby actually recognize the Belarusian authorities and unfreeze relations after last year’s political crisis.

“SP”: – Lukashenka did not rule out the aggravation of the confrontation on the border. What does it mean?

– Obviously, we are talking about the possibility of armed clashes between the border services of both states. Considering that the situation on the border is tense, and there is no constructive interaction between the authorities of Poland and Belarus, this cannot be ruled out.

“SP”: – Peskov expresses the hope that the situation on the Belarusian-Polish border will not take forms that will threaten the security of Russia. Could this happen?

– If it comes to an armed conflict, Russia will be forced to intervene. One way or another, Belarus is Russia’s main military ally and a member of the CSTO, so Moscow cannot but react. Another thing is that the EU and NATO do not need a direct military confrontation with Russia either. The West reacts to what is happening on the Polish-Belarusian border very restrained and, most likely, will try to keep Poland from any radical actions.

Expert of the analytical portal Alexey Ilyashevich I’m sure the Bild version is generally implausible.

– Okay, Russia is a separate conversation. And what is the point for Erdogan to help Lukashenka in such a delicate matter and put himself under attack? Does he have any special interests in Belarus? Does he implement them in some way? We see nothing of the kind.

“SP”: – Do you need Lukashenka? Erdogan, in his own way, begged for money in order to restrain migrants, but why is Old Man?

– Obviously, in Belarus this is happening with the tacit consent of Lukashenka and all the other leaders of the first echelon. But this is quite enough for guests from North Africa and the Middle East to master a new direction of illegal migration. I see here, first of all, business. What is a thousand migrants? This is a thousand people, each of whom is ready to pay several thousand dollars in total (the amounts are different) for their trip to the eastern borders of the EU. It turns out to be millions of dollars.

Part of the profit is earned quite legally by the air carrier, the other part goes into the pocket of the “conductors” – those who are in charge of this whole business. Why does it have to be dad’s officials or the military? They may just do nothing. The rest is a matter of technology. There are always smugglers.

Comparison with Erdogan, by the way, is very revealing. He was criticized for using migrants to put pressure on the EU, but very carefully. There was no such hysteria. And, as it turns out, it is easier to buy off Erdogan, and new sanctions will be introduced against Lukashenka.

About the fact that migrants are forced to cross the border at gunpoint is just nonsense. Why force someone if illegal immigrants themselves want it? That’s why they flew to Minsk.

“SP”: – Lukashenko believes that there is a kind of European network for the delivery of migrants. Sounds like the truth?

– It seems that Lukashenka is using the tactics of “He is a fool himself”, but I cannot confirm or deny his words. Who is involved in this, I do not know (as well as the degree of involvement of Lukashenka’s subordinates in these processes). In any case, Old Man created the conditions for migrants to go towards Poland. He directly says to Europe: let’s come to an agreement, and the problem will be resolved in an instant.

“SP”: – It is interesting that the migration flow from Belarus is much less than that from North Africa through Greece, Italy and Spain. Why doesn’t anyone accuse these countries of aggression?

– And everything is different there. For example, you knew that in Italy right now there is a trial of the former Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini, which in 2019 prevented the landing of illegal immigrants on the island of Lampedusa? He faces up to 15 years in prison for what the Polish authorities are essentially doing today. But Salvini is a sadist and a villain, and Duda and Moravetsky – well done.

“SP”: – Poland has gathered at the border a huge number of military, police, even employees of anti-terrorist units, does not let anyone in. Preparing for a deep defense? What’s next?

– We need to look for a compromise, involve international organizations. Lukashenka offers a simple way out – let’s sit down and agree, everything will be the same. But for this, Europe needs to de facto recognize the legitimacy of the President of Belarus (this is the question of what he wants).

“SP”: – According to Peskov, Moscow hopes that the situation on the Belarusian-Polish border will not take forms that will threaten the security of Russia. Earlier, some experts suggested that the West may use force against Belarus, and we will have to intervene. Is it possible?

– My colleague Alexander Nosovich one of the first to suggest that Belarus and Poland are closer than ever to the beginning of a full-fledged military conflict. I cannot but agree: there is a risk. This does not mean that Poland will take and attack Belarus like Hitler in 1941. Of course not. She doesn’t have to twitch at all now – after all, migrants are on the Belarusian side. But there, on both sides, in close proximity to each other, troops are concentrated, Poland mobilized about 12 thousand troops. And this is a dangerous situation in itself. From one stray bullet, a full-fledged firefight can flare up. And the shootout (God forbid, of course!) Will turn into a massacre.

I think it is time to interfere with the “elder brothers” – Russia and the European Union. They must have a common goal: to prevent bloodshed.
