Biden’s America: “One Nation” or “We Against Them”?

“We met the enemy, and he is us,” said Pogo, a cartoon character. Walt Kelly half a century ago about what we Americans are doing with the environment in which we live.

Observing Pogo comes to mind when rereading President’s inaugural address Joe Biden

Biden began with a lofty, reassuring and familiar note: “This is a great nation. We are good people. “

He finished in the same spirit: “So, with purposefulness and determination we turn to the tasks of our time. Supported by faith. Driven by conviction. And devoted to each other and to the country that we love with all our hearts. “

However, in the address itself, Biden outlined what he considers to be the historical crimes of this nation and those sins of the soul that torment a significant portion of our population.

Among the diseases that plague America, Biden said, are “political extremism, white supremacy” and “domestic terrorism.”

How can we overcome these manifestations of evil?

Biden said, “Unity is the way.”

But how can good Americans align themselves with white supremacists and domestic terrorists? Shouldn’t we stand out and challenge them? And who are they?

Of course, among the enemies is the crowd that on January 6 invaded the Capitol and littered it. But what about the hundreds of thousands who went to rallies Exchange? What about the 75 million people who voted for Donald Trump?

Are the “despised” outside the company of the saved? Are they as I once said of them Hillary Clinton, “Hopelessly incorrigible”?

“Today we are celebrating a triumph – not a candidate, but deeds, deeds of democracy.”

It clearly implies that a Trump victory on November 3 would be a defeat for democracy. How unifying is it?

“Today, this January day,” Biden said, “my whole soul is in this: Unite America. Unite our people. And unite our nation. I ask every American to join me in this endeavor. “

Then he listed the characteristics of our enemy: “Anger, resentment and hatred.”

Nonetheless, on the night of the inauguration, antifa gangs attacked the headquarters of the Democratic Party in Portland and turned American flags in Seattle into torches – the same leftist gangs that brought us a long hot summer of riots, looting and arson after death George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Did Biden ever condemn these gangs by name, as he condemned the crowd that invaded the Capitol on January 6?

Biden went on to describe the history of the United States as he sees it – as a long Manichean * struggle for the soul of America.

“… The forces separating us are deep and real. … Our history is a constant struggle between the American ideal, according to which we are all created equal, and another harsh ugly reality, according to which racism, nativism, fear and demonization have long divided us. “

But if our story is an endless struggle against racism, nativism and demagoguery, and today’s struggle is against rampant anger, resentment, hatred, extremism, violence and lawlessness, as well as against “white supremacists and domestic terrorists”, then how can we with certainty to call themselves a “great nation” and “good people”?

Although Biden defines the demonic nature of the enemies, he does not name them. Who are they? How can we defeat them if the president does not recognize them? And if they are evil and we are good, then why should we unite with them and not ostracize and crush them?

In Joe’s picture: “We can see each other not as enemies, but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop screaming, and lower the temperature. For without unity there is no peace – only bitterness and rage. “

But isn’t “rage” a legitimate attribute of those fighting the hated enemies Biden describes?

“So today, at this time, in this place, let’s start over. We all. Let’s start listening to each other again.

Listen to each other. Behold each other. Show respect for each other. “

This call for unity is followed by another call – “to reject a culture in which the very facts are manipulated and even fabricated.”

After that, Biden let out a tear at the deceit.

“The last weeks and months have taught us a painful lesson. There is truth and there is a lie – a lie that is spoken for the sake of power and profit. “

All our leaders have a responsibility and a responsibility to “defend the truth and defeat the lie”.

But who are the liars? And if we are going to fight the liars, then why did Biden announce a minute later: “We must put an end to this non-civil war …”?

About the inaugural speech Warren Harding ** it was said to be “an army of bombastic phrases marching in the countryside in search of an idea.”

Joe Biden’s inauguration was the most confusing, controversial, and incoherent that ever took place on the steps of the Capitol. It reflects the thoughts of its author and the state of the Union that he now heads.

Good luck, Mr. President. You will need it, and so will we.

*Manichaeism or Manichaeism (Greek Μανιχαϊσμός, Chinese trad. 摩尼教, pinyin fried food) Is a syncretic religious doctrine that arose in the III century in the Sassanid state (on the territory of modern Iraq). Named after its founder, Mani, with the addition of the epithet “alive” (sir. ܡܐܢܝ ܚܝܐ, Mani Shaya). Mani’s teachings were composed mainly of Christian-Gnostic concepts based on a specific understanding of the Bible, but over time it absorbed a large number of borrowings from other religions – Zoroastrianism and Buddhism – as it was preached in the countries of their spread. Manichaeism was not directly related to Western and Eastern teachings, which were characterized by a dualistic doctrine (Catharism, Paulicism, Zindik), and the definition of “Manichean” was used by the Christian and Muslim clergy as an invective. The Manichean doctrine proper was characterized by the idea of the universal character of true religion, which passes through the latent and manifest stages.

After two years in power, Harding died on August 2, 1923 in San Francisco while touring the western states, presumably from a massive heart attack. Harding is known as a fan of the bohemian lifestyle (poker, addiction to alcohol, love affairs), which he did not change during his presidency.
