Belarus: the law on the genocide of the Belarusian people and the extremism of the illegal Union of Poles

The Grodno court declared the information resource of the illegal Union of Poles in Belarus (SPvB) extremist.

“We will find other ways to convey to our readers the word without censorship about the situation of the Polish national minority in Belarus and about our unjustly arrested heroes!” – promised, in turn, SPvB.

Under “unfairly arrested heroes” we mean the head of the SPvB Angelica Boris and her handy Andrzej Poczobut… They are suspected of committing crimes motivated by ethnic hatred and propaganda of Nazism. They were detained in March 2021. This was the reaction of the Belarusian law enforcement officers to the regular participation of these persons in the propaganda of the cult of the Polish Home Army and other anti-Soviet groups that collaborated with the Nazis.

Borys and Poczobut actively participated in the attempted coup after the presidential elections in August 2020, coordinating the illegal actions of Polish activists.

Following the recognition of the SPvB information resource as extremist, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko adopted a law criminalizing public denial of the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War and in the postwar years… Now the distribution and placement in the media and the mention in public speeches of information denying the genocide of the Belarusian people will be punishable by restriction or imprisonment for up to five years.

According to the law, not only Nazis, but also members of the Polish bandit underground who terrorized the civilian population in 1944-1951 are legally classified as war criminals guilty of genocide. In Poland, these people are elevated to the rank of heroes, they are paid a corresponding pension, and the young generation of Poles are brought up on their examples.

Minsk believes that the adoption of the law will put an end to the glorification in Belarus through the efforts of Borys, Poczobut and others like them Polish war criminals, distort the history of the Great Patriotic War and will contribute to the cohesion of the Belarusian society.
