Armin Laschet officially approved as chairman of the ruling party in Germany

The Prime Minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet has been officially confirmed as the chairman of the ruling party in Germany, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The final results of the elections were summed up by the general secretary of the party Paul Zimiak and member of the Bundestag Thomas de Mezières, TASS reports.

Internet voting of delegates took place last week. A vote by mail was also held, the results of which became known on January 22.

More than 83% of the delegates voted for Lashet.

As a reminder, the delegates of the online congress of the Christian Democratic Union elected Armin Lashet as the new party chairman on January 16, 2021.

The new head of the party is expected to lead the Conservatives to parliamentary elections this year. However, it is possible that another person has been nominated as a candidate for chancellor.
