Armenian President accused of British citizenship

Criminal case opened against Armen Sargsyan

The General Prosecutor’s Office of Armenia announced the initiation of a criminal case against the current President of Armenia Armen Sargsyan in connection with the concealment of dual citizenship.

He never hid that he was previously a British citizen, while he always said that he renounced British citizenship back in 2011. However, the chairman of the Chamber of Advocates of Armenia Ara Zohrabyan sure it isn’t.

“I would like to remind you that 53 lawyers filed a complaint about a crime related to concealing the fact of Armenian President Armen Sarkisian’s dual citizenship. The Special Investigative Service (SIS) refused to open a criminal case on the basis of a statement submitted by lawyers. I inform you that the Prosecutor General’s Office canceled the decision of the CCC and opened a criminal case under Article 325 of Part 1 of the Criminal Code (“Falsification, sale or use of documents”) “,

– Ara Zohrabyan wrote on his Facebook page.

According to the Constitution of Armenia (article 124, part 2), a person over forty years old can become the president of the country on one condition – for the last six years he must permanently reside in the country and be a citizen of Armenia.

Armen Sargsyan was elected president in March 2018, therefore, he had to withdraw from British citizenship before March 1, 2012, otherwise Sargsyan could not be elected to the presidency. However, Ara Zohrabyan claims that he has irrefutable evidence that the President of Armenia until the end of 2012 (at least) retained British citizenship.

Also, during the election of the President of Armenia, the requirement that a presidential candidate must permanently reside in the country for at least six years was violated.

“However, according to the UK Tax Service, the founder and director of Eurasia House International LLC Armen Sargsyan, in the documents submitted to the tax authorities for the period 2011-2014, indicated the UK as the country of residence, and citizenship of this country”,
