Armenia sees a threat in the military exercises of Baku and Ankara

A special group of the Turkish military command has been created

Azerbaijan, together with Turkey, are conducting military exercises on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh in the immediate vicinity of the Lachin “corridor”.

“In accordance with the agreement on military cooperation concluded between Azerbaijan and Turkey, joint tactical exercises with live fire have started in the Lachin region. The main goal of the exercises is to improve interaction and combat coordination during combat operations. Particular attention is paid to improving the skills of using modern military equipment and other military equipment in difficult terrain conditions “,

– reported the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan.

Against the background of the ongoing joint exercises, the media reported that a special group of the Turkish military command has been created in Baku. The special group was headed by four Turkish generals – they will represent the Turkish Armed Forces in Azerbaijan.

However, according to the Turkologist Vladimir Avatkov, this group has actually been functioning since 1992, now there have just been changes: the status has been increased – now the group is represented by four generals, led by a Turkish major general Bakhtiyar Ersaywho has been in Azerbaijan for a long time

“The change in the group of the Turkish military command in Azerbaijan is a natural consequence of many processes and the signed Shusha union declaration between Turkey and Azerbaijan. The strengthening of Ankara is happening gradually – slowly but surely. It didn’t start today, it won’t end tomorrow, ”

– Avatkov is sure.

A military expert Gevorg Gevorkyan has no doubts: the military exercises of Ankara and Baku are preparation for new military actions against Armenia, while in Yerevan the issue of renouncing general military service in favor of a professional army is constantly discussed, and the Armenian society is increasingly splitting, losing its former unity. All this, in his opinion, affects the country’s defense capability, which the enemy will surely take advantage of.

In the Republic of Artsakh (the Armenian name for Nagorno-Karabakh), the ongoing military exercises are perceived as a threat.

“We are closely following the actions of Azerbaijan and Turkey in the occupied territories of Artsakh. We treat this as new challenges and take these new realities into account when building our policy, ”

– said the press secretary of the head of Nagorno-Karabakh Lyusine Avanesyan

The Armenian Foreign Ministry also commented on the joint Turkish-Azerbaijani tactical exercises in the Lachin region, which came under the control of Baku following the results of the 44-day war in 2020.

“We view the holding of Turkish-Azerbaijani exercises near the borders of Armenia and Artsakh and in the Lachin corridor area as an action damaging the de-escalation steps, inconsistent with the spirit of the trilateral statement of November 9, 2002 and undermining efforts to consolidate lasting peace, security and stability,”

– reads the message of the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.
