Armenia: Border Situation Raises Concerns

The military command was unable to answer many questions from parliament members

A closed meeting of the National Council of Armenia on the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was held in Yerevan with the participation of the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces Kamo Kochuntsa and the commander of the border troops of the National Security Service of Armenia Arman Maralchyan… The meeting was called urgently at the initiative of the opposition factions.

According to the chairman of the parliamentary faction of the “Armenia” party Seyran Ohanyan, the deputies had many questions to the invited military, but they could not answer them. Nevertheless, from the answers that were nevertheless voiced during the meeting, the opposition deputies drew a conclusion.

“The conclusion is this: there was no reason for the Armenian troops under the Ministry of Defense or border units to retreat from the positions where the war ended, especially in the areas of Syunik and Gegharkunik. There is also a question for the command: why the decision was not made in a timely manner to occupy important strategic points, roads and heights on the line of contact ”,

– Ohanyan told reporters after the meeting.

Unfortunately, no one was able to answer the important question why and how the Azerbaijani military forces crossed the state border of Armenia and invaded the territory of a sovereign state, no one was responsible for this, no one told whether any measures were being taken to prevent the occupiers left the Armenian land, the head of the faction noted. Taking into account all that has been said, it is necessary to urgently mobilize and make a number of important decisions for the country, Seyran Ohanyan is sure, explaining this by the fact that “Reality raises concern”

MP from the opposition faction of the party “I have the honor” Taguhi Tovmasyan also complained to reporters that the deputies could not get any clarification about the situation at the border.

“No question is answered. Whatever we ask, we are answered: “State secret.” But even the length of the border in kilometers is not announced, to say nothing of other issues, ”

Tovmasyan was indignant.

She wanted to get answers to the most important question for her: why did the Armenian side not resist and defend its positions, but obediently left them?

Instead of the military, Artur Sargsyan, the former mayor of the city of Sisian and now a member of parliament from the Hayastan bloc, answered this question. He told reporters after the meeting that on December 17 last year, the Minister of Defense (at that time) Vagharshak Harutyunyan arrived in Goris, gathered the heads of the communities and announced that by 17:00 the next day all Armenian units should be withdrawn from their positions.

“To all our questions about why we should withdraw, if the document of November 9 says otherwise, the minister said that he was not in the know,”

– reminded Sargsyan, adding that in some places the Armenian military withdrew 25 kilometers, and their positions were occupied by Azerbaijanis.
