Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said that relations between the Russian Federation and the United States are in deep crisis, reports TASS.
According to Antonov, "no breakthroughs" are expected in the near future, given that the United States faces a presidential election. He noted that Russia is ready to develop relations to the same extent as the American side is ready for this, and added that so far there is no "great desire" to develop relations on the part of the United States.
He stressed that in such a situation, communication between citizens, representatives of the spheres of culture and sports of the two countries is now especially important.
Earlier, Antonov, after the words of the Deputy Assistant to the head of the Pentagon Robert Sufer that the United States began to modernize its nuclear forces in response to the same actions by Russia, said that the global nuclear deterrent was destabilized by the US decision to put into service low-yield nuclear warheads, rather than actions Russia.
The ambassador recalled that last year the United States installed low-yield W76-2 warheads on Trident II ballistic missiles. According to Antonov, the Pentagon is making such accusations against the Russian Federation in order to justify the US policy of lowering the "threshold" for the use of nuclear weapons. The diplomat stressed that the Russian nuclear policy is purely defensive in nature.
