Air Defense Colonel spoke about aerospace purposes for the S-500 in Crimea

On the eve of the Day of the Air Defense Forces, which is celebrated on April 11, information appeared on the Web that the Crimea will become one of the first Russian regions where new S-500 Prometheus missile defense systems will be put on alert. And it will happen pretty soon. Is this somehow connected with the strengthening of the grouping of Ukrainian troops in the Donbass and regular NATO exercises in the Black Sea?

On the eve of the professional holiday of the defenders of the sky, this was reported by a military expert, head of the anti-aircraft missile forces (2007-2009) of the Special Forces Command (Moscow Air Defense District), Colonel Sergei Khatylev.

– Now it is difficult to say where this complex will appear first. Such a strategic choice rests with the top military leadership, the expert explained. – I can only say that we are now at such a stage in the formation of this complex, when all its main parts have already been tested. In the near future – you will hear about it – certain types of tests will take place in the Far North, after which it will be possible to say for sure where this complex will go first, and what will cover – south, north, east or west.

The fact is that we have made a special decision on the deployment and strengthening of anti-missile and air defense sectors in the main coastal areas. In this regard, please note that eight regiments of S-400 complexes were initially placed only around Moscow. But when the task of covering the coastal regions of the country began to be solved, the S-400s were already deployed in Kaliningrad, Murmansk, Vladivostok, Kamchatka and, naturally, to the Crimea. There are two S-400 regiments. And if the S-500 appears there now, then this system will cover the entire Black Sea almost completely. Not only from the point of view of air defense, but also of anti-missile defense.

There is no doubt whatsoever about protection against ballistic targets. Actually, there was enough “four hundred” (S-400) for this. But the S-500 complex will already be able to work for space purposes. That is, it will take aim at everything American that flies in near space at altitudes up to 200 km, including satellites and other devices such as their experimental X-37 space plane.

And when we talk about ballistic targets, what else is important here? We are used to thinking that a ballistic missile warhead is shot down by missile defense systems at the final stage of flight. For example, the S-400 air defense system, and the modernized S-300, automatically “capture” the target at altitudes of about 70-80 km above the object. Further, they also automatically destroy it at an altitude of 18-19 km.

And now we are talking about the fact that in the new system – S-500 – destruction and shooting at such ballistic targets is possible at other stages of their flight. That is, both at the start of this rocket at the initial stage of the trajectory, and at the turning point, when the rocket flies along a ballistic trajectory, reaching the highest point, and when it begins to fall on the object. In short, our S-500 system will be able to destroy a target at almost all stages of its flight.

The same applies to hypersonic targets. Our S-400 is capable of working against hypersonic targets flying at a speed of 4800-6000 km per hour. And the S-500 can operate at higher speeds – 8000 km per hour or more. But the Americans do not yet have missiles with such speeds. Did not do. Donald Trump said something about 20 thousand km per hour, but these missiles cannot show anything like this on tests. The other day they had another unsuccessful test of an aviation hypersonic missile – it was never able to separate from its carrier aircraft. There was no speed at all, and not that hypersonic.

As for the protection of the Crimea from unmanned aerial vehicles, then simultaneously with the S-500 there will still work against drones the Pantsir-SM complexes. They were directly modified for the effective destruction of drones, which was done after the war in Karabakh. This complex now has four types of missiles, improved guns, a detection system that “sees” everything in different, wider ranges. Moreover, such “Armor” can work not only on tactical drones, which operate at low altitudes, throw bombs, but also on strategic ones, such as the American Global Hawk, flying at altitudes of 20-30 thousand meters.

What I said is all the immediate plans. Neither Washington nor Kiev will like them, so there will soon be a lot of screeching about this in the West.
