Controlled thermonuclear fusion (CTF) is the synthesis of heavier atomic nuclei from lighter ones in order to obtain energy, which, in contrast to explosive thermonuclear fusion (used in thermonuclear explosive devices), is of a controlled nature. Controlled thermonuclear fusion differs from traditional nuclear power in that the latter uses a decay reaction, during which lighter nuclei are obtained from heavy nuclei.
