It can be difficult to choose home slippers. However, the rules for caring for shoes that a person wears in an apartment or house turn out to be no less complicated. Few people have any idea how often home slippers need to be changed. At the same time, doctors note that there are a number of rules that should be followed if you want to keep your feet healthy.
How to properly care for home shoes so that they serve longer and at the same time do not spoil the health of the legs, AiF.ru told Olga Chizhevskaya, Executive Director of the Association of Medical Centers and Doctors “League of Podiatry”…
As the specialist notes, the coronavirus pandemic and the global lockdowns that followed it spurred the manufacturers of home shoes, forcing them to reconsider their approaches to its creation. After all, people had to pay maximum attention to the comfort of the house, and after the restrictions were lifted, the habit of taking care of their feet at home remained. “Having recovered from the coronavirus shock, shoe manufacturers jumped in and diversified their collections with all sorts of variations on the theme: grandmothers, boots, sandals, slippers, clogs, braids. They can be made of anything: from leather, suede, wool, linen to artificial materials, and the soles – of leather, polymers, cork or even wood, ”notes Olga Chizhevskaya.
How to wear indoor shoes?
It is unlikely that any person’s plans include regular washing of their favorite slippers, and even with any wear resistance, they will still with a low degree of probability withstand a regular processing cycle, notes Olga Chizhevskaya.
“Therefore, for hygienic reasons, it is better to wear your favorite sleepers or grandmothers off your bare feet. Socks made from natural fabrics (such as wool and cotton) absorb excess sweat. This is important not only because of the unpleasant odor. If the sweat is not absorbed, the feet become wet, and this is heaven for fungal infections and all sorts of irritations, ”says the specialist.
How long can you wear the same pair of slippers?
Podiatrists (foot specialists) have quite clear requirements for healthy footwear, including good fixation on the leg and a form-stable heel counter. “In this case, the“ ideal pair ”does not violate the physiological walking pattern, which means it does not entail misalignment and destabilization in the entire musculoskeletal system. Thus, if your favorite slippers acquire a worn-out backdrop and gradually turn into a shapeless thing, their place, let’s be honest with ourselves, in the trash heap, ”emphasizes Olga Chizhevskaya.
Another point, the specialist notes, to which you must certainly pay attention, is the wear of the sole. By the way, the uneven character of scuffs can be a signal for an extraordinary visit to the doctor.
“The service life of the slippers-boots, reminiscent of ugg boots, is short. Their heel quickly treads and slides down, provoking a blockage of the foot and pain in the legs, ”says Olga Chizhevskaya.
Another disadvantage of any unnecessarily worn footwear, as the specialist emphasizes, is that it jumps off the feet and its owner has to strain the leg, constantly overloading the plantar ligaments and provoking such troubles as a heel spur and bursitis.
Is it good to go barefoot at home?
It would seem, what could be more correct and physiological than walking barefoot around your home? Full contact with the supporting surface promotes the natural development of gait and coordination and is a priori beneficial. “But, as they say, there are nuances. Without a doubt, home shoes are strictly indicated for various pathological conditions, ”says Olga Chizhevskaya. Their list includes:
- Diabetic foot syndrome… Against the background of deteriorating blood supply and reduced sensitivity, any microdamage, scratch can have serious consequences.
- Mycoses (fungal diseases)… Walking barefoot in the presence of lesions of even small areas of the foot (between the toes) – expose the risk of illness to household members and even guests of the house. The fungus can live outside the host’s foot for up to 14 days. By the way, it is for this reason that during the active stage of the fight against the disease it is important to process the inner surface of the slippers in order to avoid re-infection.
- Deformities and diseases of the foot, in which the wearing of individual orthopedic insoles is part of the therapy. Orthoses are indicated for a range of problems from hallux valgus to trauma rehabilitation and should be moved from outdoor to indoor shoes.
If you have doubts about the correctness of the choice, you should consult with a specialist. He will help you choose the perfect shoe for your home and give you recommendations for optimal care of your shoes.
In the Ottoman Empire, before becoming home shoes, slippers were a symbol of … captivity. In soft, weightless shoes, the concubines stepped on expensive carpets. But they could not escape into the street. The sole was too thin – not suitable for walking on rocky roads.
The Three T Principle
Concerned about the comfort of the house, as Olga Chizhevskaya says, it is important to make sure that life does not begin to be built on the principle of three “T”: ottoman, slippers, TV. Podiatrists warn: physical inactivity is dangerous for your health. And it is especially unacceptable in the spring, when the weather “whispers” and the treadmills in the park beckon.
