The news of the unscheduled double vacations announced by the mayor was met differently by the parents of the capital and by the schoolchildren themselves. The first - with anxiety, and the second - of course, with delight. Leaving the kids to mess around or use this time to improve their performance?
Our expert - family and child psychologist Anna Yaroshenko...
The fears of adults who have recently survived six months of telecommuting are clear: homeschooling has proven to be difficult. It turned out that working remotely, keeping house and replacing teachers for one, or even several schoolchildren in a family, is very difficult (as well as sometimes sharing one computer for all). And the guys themselves, as shown by surveys, were also far from enthusiastic about online studies.
To avoid excruciating pain
As shown by the survey of the National Medical Research Center of Children's Health of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, 83.8% of schoolchildren faced unfavorable mental reactions against the background of self-isolation and distance learning. More than half of the respondents complained of sleep disturbances, over 40% - of depression, about the same - of asthenia, every fourth had a headache syndrome. Children began to walk less, do their homework longer. As a result, every third student reacted negatively to distance learning, and every fifth called this time unbearable. Closer to September, a third of children admitted that they are experiencing depression and apathy in connection with an early return to school.
Nevertheless, by the end of the first academic month, most schoolchildren were still able to get back on track. However, the pandemic, whose development is rather unpredictable, threatens to further make adjustments to our lives. At least for the next two weeks, parents will again have to take on the role of teachers. After all, if for such a long time to leave the children to themselves, then it will be difficult for them to get together. In addition, if you again have to sit on the remote control, it is better to prepare in advance. Moms and dads can help moms and dads by following certain rules to avoid the negative consequences that online studies caused in the past year.
Secret # 1. Don't overload with classes.
During the first week of vacation, it is better not to bother children with textbooks at all. Let them rest a little, because this first month at school after a long self-isolation was not easy for them. And besides, excessive workload does not lead to an improvement in academic performance, but to rejection of learning and a rapid decrease in its effectiveness.
Do not think that if the working day at school is 5 lessons of 45 minutes, then you need to study at home at least. After all, the comprehension of school wisdom does not go all the time: the teacher during the lesson is necessarily distracted by the establishment of discipline in the classroom, waiting for the student to come to the blackboard, writing homework, and so on. Therefore, studying at home for 4 or more hours a day is too much.
Secret # 2. Take a break
No wonder there are breaks at school! Take breaks of 5 minutes every half hour. Studies show that after about 30 minutes, concentration drops and memorization decreases. In addition, it is during the breaks that the learned information moves from short-term memory to long-term memory.
But during the respite, the child should not hang out on social networks or on TV. Better to let him jump, have a bite, or just lie on the couch. And it is also desirable that not only weekends, but also one weekday a week be free from studies. In any case, this applies to primary and secondary school students. By the way, it is important that at least part of their free time children plan not the way their parents want, but the way they like it.
Secret number 3. Don't forget about the regime
Rospotrebnadzor recommends that elementary school students sleep at least 10 hours. And first-graders also need a nap. Based on this, chart the approximate hours for your student to go to bed and get up. Try to observe the regime during the holidays. But, of course, small indulgences are permissible, you can shift the time of getting up and going to bed an hour later, but no more. Walking is also recommended - 2 hours a day - and active outdoor games to improve cognition. Physical activity improves mood and helps to cope with stress. It is not for nothing that WHO recommends 150 minutes a week for moderate exercise. Finally, the child should have some free time for games and "doing nothing". It turns out that it is necessary to engage in nonsense!
Secret # 4. Use helper services
Please note that the child perceives the parent worse than the teacher, and not because he does not trust or does not feel authority, but simply because mothers and fathers do not know pedagogical methods and techniques and sometimes cannot clearly explain a particular topic. However, this does not mean that parents should recuse themselves for the next half month. Better to try out online educational platforms with ready-made content. There are services with theoretical material (MES, NES, InternetUrok.ru) and with practical assignments (Yandex.Update, Uchi.ru, YaKlass).
Secret number 5. Do not seek to embrace the immensity
On vacation, do not try to learn all the school sciences. Otherwise, the result will be physical and mental exhaustion of the child. Choose one or two subjects with which there are the most serious problems, or those that will be useful to the child in the future professional realization, and focus on them. If it is not possible to eliminate the gaps in children's knowledge by ourselves, involve professionals (lessons via video communication and in a group will cost less than a teacher who comes to the house). But taking tutors in elementary school is probably still not worth it.
Secret # 6. Don't get hung up on grades
Of course, it's nice when a child clicks on puzzles like nuts and gets fives for them. But it is necessary to study not for the sake of good grades, but in order for the student to feel the taste of knowledge and the joy that he began to understand the subject. And good grades will catch up later, don't worry. By the way, it is unproductive to scold and punish for deuces. As a rule, children who have a positive attitude towards learning and are motivated by some goal themselves are very worried about such a failure. Therefore, for them to go through a negative experience with a deuce can even be beneficial, as it will allow them to become more independent and responsible.
In order for the child to be able to control his own behavior and do not what he wants, but what is needed, one should not scold him or give orders. It is important to be able to negotiate with the child, regardless of how old he is. Establish certain rules and try not only to convey to the child a set of these requirements, but also to explain why something is forbidden to him and for what he must do this and that. The first step to "delegation of authority" can be a collaborative scheduling.
However, no explanation will work if you do not lead the children by example.
Secret # 8. Set a Good Example
If you want your child to be drawn to knowledge, be curious yourself: read, go to museums, learn new things. If you require accuracy, discipline, punctuality from your child, then meet these requirements.
